Karen Blixen Cottages & Restaurant – Nairobi

The Karen Blixen Coffee Garden Restaurant and Cottages are located in Karen, Kenya, a beautiful, peaceful suburb approximately 20 miles from downtown Nairobi. The cottages serve as a perfect alternate accommodation to the traditional Nairobi city hotels when visiting the capital city of Kenya during your African safari overnight, Kenya countryside vacation or even on business.

The cottages are located in the midst of one of the oldest formal gardens in Kenya, which have huge jacaranda, candelabra, cactus, bottlebrush, and other trees. Over 200 types of flowers bloom through the year and numerous bird feeders attract hundreds of varieties of birds.

All cottages have a veranda for relaxing while enjoying the birds, butterflies and flowers of the garden. We provide feeders to attract a wide variety of birds and can house as many as 30 guests. Eight of the cottages have individual suites and three have two bedroom suites with a common large sitting room. The honeymoon cottage has a large bedroom and sitting room each with a fireplace.

Each bedroom has a large bathroom with its own shower and bath. Internet connections and phones are available in all rooms. Three cottages have two private suites with a separate dressing room.

Residents can also enjoy twenty-four-hour room service. A private swimming poll and private garden bar are available for a relaxing afternoon or for small group get together. Private outdoor dinner parties by the pool can also be arranged.

The Verandah is a relaxed, informal daytime restaurant situated in Nairobi Kenya. A short drive from the hectic city centre brings you to Nairobi's country suburbs, home of the Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Museum, the Giraffe Manor, and of course, THE VERANDAH.

The Verandah caters to tourists and residents alike, equally popular with both.Inside seating, complete with a fireplace for those chilly Kenya days has open views to the garden where tables are set under an immense fever tree amongst lush foliage and shady umbrellas

The garden is host and home to numerous species of birds which flock to feeding trays and water dishes for your lunchtime entertainment. Indoor "palms' are the nesting place of several generations of Ruffous Sparrows. Seasonally you'll see fire finch, pin tailed wydah, various weavers, forest oriole , robin chat, indigo birds, manikins, sunbirds and an elusive pair of paradise fly catchers.

ABOUT ROLFS PLACE

Leopard cliff Mansion is situated on the South east border of Nairobi National Park only 25 minutes from the Nairobi centre. Built like a medieval fortress on the edge of a cliff overlooking the gorge. Access over the gorge is provided by an adventures suspension bridge which reminds one of an Indian Jones movie The park, which can be easily accessed is a few hundred meters away through the massai lodge gate. On a clear day one can appreciate a panoramic view of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and the adjacent Ngong hills (the scenic setting of Karen Blixen Estate). The neighboring game parks afford one the unique opportunity to view wild animals across the gorge. The roaring of lions and leopards often pierce stillness of the night. We also arrange for Transfers to and from Jomo Kenyatta Airport, Helicopter trips to any destination in Kenya to the finest lodges or resorts on the coast. The lounge features regalia taken from catering for movies such as "Out Of Africa", "Gorillas in the mist " and “Africa Mon Amour". After all owners Rolf Schmid covered for 43 major movie Productions over a span of 35 years.

Dining
Our food is of International standards and the ambiance in our various dining facilities is very accommodating and simply "Out of Africa”. Offered is the large terrace overlooking the gorge which seats up to 50 diners. A private dining room is also available which can hold 20 people and is also suitable as a conference hall.

Terrace
A terrace is extending outdoors from a floor of the Mansion and is an open paved area outdoor with dinning chairs and tables with a great view of the bridge and gorge.

Swimming Pool
The swimming pool is near the Mansion and is a nice place to cool off in the afternoon and one can also enjoy and appreciate a panoramic view of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and the adjacent Ngong hills.
