Sarova Shaba Game Lodge

Deep in the arid North Country of Kenya; situated across the Great North Road, is Shaba National Reserve which forms part of a trio of reserves quite different from the ones found in Kenya. Shaba takes its name from Mount Shaba (1525 meters), a volcanic mountain that became extinct around 5,000 years ago and lies on the border of the reserve. In the middle of this desert of volcanic earth lies Sarova Shaba Game Lodge; Kenya's best kept secret. Built in an oasis around the natural terrain of this breathtaking volcanic desert, the Lodge is attractively laid out with chalet style rooms overlooking the Uaso Nyiro River. Natural spring water has been harnessed to ribbon its way in and out, all around the property creating a beautiful landscape. The Lodge is 314 kms from Nairobi, a 45 minute flight from Nairobi to Shaba or Samburu airstrip or a picturesque 5 hour drive through the curving roads around Mt. Spread over acres, Sarova Shaba Game Lodge is set along the bank of the Uaso Nyiro River laid out around the natural springs that flow into the river. The Lodge has a virtual mini forest of indigenuous trees, a fish pond and a large free form swimming pool.

                        
The Lodge has a presidential suite, 4 executive suites, and 80 standard rooms, all with ensuite bathrooms. The rooms are chalet style, on two storey thatched roof wooden structures. Imagine comfortably seated in our bush garden while enjoying the families of graceful giraffes and slender gazelles coming for a sip of water; watchful of the great Nile crocodile lurching the river water. Watch our resident hippo pod with their fat little baby hippos; busy pushing and shoving at each other. Enjoy the elephants as they come in their dozens to gulp down trunks full of water and a playful wash in the Mara River. Or relax with a good book at your private verandah while observing the sturdy buffalos, the grand elands and the numerous zebras grazing the corridor of the impressive Oloololo Escarpment, just opposite your cozy canvas tent.

Wildlife experiences

Game drives are encouraged within Mara North Conservancy for the utmost exclusive and private safari experience with low impact tourism and controlled vehicle density.

Lion-watching allow guests to assist monitoring the lions of the Mara North Conservancy. The activity is a partnership between Mara Predator Program and Karen Blixen Camp.

Game walking with armed guides is arranged for those who wish to experience the magnitude of the Mara savannah on foot.

Nature walks are kept within the camp and focus entirely on the rich birdlife and little insects inhabiting the area and how the Masai make use of the indigenous plants for medical and ritual purposes.

Balloon safari will take you high above the impressive Masai Mara plains, and gliding quietly through the wind is truly a magical and breathtaking experience.

Community visits to the local Maasai Manyatta (village), school, market and church gives anyone interested a closer understanding of the proud Maasai people and their heritage as an integral part of the Masai Mara Ecosystem.
